Handmade Paper Quilling

As a craftsman with years of experience in paper quilling, I strongly believe that paper quilling art is not merely a craft, it is an art of culture and an art of expressing emotion. I hope to convey more emotional and symbolic connotations into my paper quilling works so that it becomes one of the tangible cultural assets, and then let more people know it, let the world become familiar with it and appreciate it.

Relief paper quilling art; thin line and layers of hues have a capability to narrate a story and express emotions. They are not made as mere beauticians to hang on the walls, but they are vessels of culture. Regarding trying to combine traditional part and modern looking design in my paper quilling works, I want to present the great history and the soul of Chinese culture. My desire is that, by doing these works, I can stimulate the passion for respecting traditional culture and empower the safeguard of intangible cultural heritage.

It is of great importance to popularize the art of paper quilling as an immaterial cultural property. As people are getting busier with their lifestyles, many forms of crafts that are practiced in the past have been taken to the background. The purpose of this paper is to make a new generation aware of such a valuable craft in order to prevent it from fading away along with many other skills. This is not mere acknowledgement of history but is definitely an investment in the future too. Each succeeding generation should be given a chance to learn and appreciate these forms of art as part of the total cultural heritage.

Moreover, extending paper quilling art to become the representative of intangible cultural heritage is also an acknowledgment of world cultural diversity. Nevertheless, knowledge or appreciation of other cultures has become especially significant in the age of globalization. Since paper quilling art is considered as an aspect of culture, art done in quilling paper can transcend language barriers, link people together and help reconcile different cultures.

In conclusion, that is why I plan and work to bring the art of paper quilling at the world level to focus on intangible cultural heritage to continue the work, promote effective exchange and sharing of stories about the art of paper quilling. I think that only together we can make people recognize the charm and depth of art and extend the magical world of paper quilling art between the past and future, emotions and logic.
